Sequels

Sequel to the “The House of the Scorpion”, by Nancy Farmer is going to be a thing! So I’m pretty excited.

Never heard of “The House of the Scorpion“? It was a YA science fiction novel from 2002.  It was also my favorite book when I was growing up (outside of the Harry Potter books).  If you haven’t read it, I recommend it.

Anyway, a sequel has been rumored for over ten years now, and it finally looks like one is really coming.  Despite the three year gap between Harry Potter GOF and OOTP (which did feel like a life time) Harry Potter spoiled us a bit.  Those books (unlike the George RR Martins “Song of Ice and Fire” Series) came out in pretty quick succession.  We had time to debate and guess and ponder, but not long enough to forget, between books.  10 years is a little different.

Does it dampen my excitement? No.  I only regret that, unlike when I read the original, I will not be the same age as the characters.  And I hope the wait was worth it.

But when I write a series, I hope to write in relatively quick succession.  I want my story to grow with my readers, as Harry Potter grew with me.  I have faith that true fans will read no matter the time (as I will with Nancy Farmer’s work) but there is something to be said, especially with YA books, about moving with the fans.
