In the New Year 5785

A year ago today I was awake at 2 am when news started appearing on my social feeds about October 7th and what was happening in Israel.

I was awake at 2 am because I was on a girls’ trip weekend with my best lifelong friends.

In 365 days two of those women have since had babies, one has lost a parent, and two of us have started new jobs. So much can change in one year.

And yet, today, I am most preoccupied by what has remained the same. There are still civilians being held hostage in Gaza, including children. There are still civilians being bombarded by rockets. There are still 1200 dead who could hardly be mourned. There is still so much hatred and misunderstanding that stands in for journalism, and debate, and motive.

As the Jewish New Year begins, and October 7th finds us again, I wonder how we can find the sweetness and embrace the change that follows us all from year to year. What a difference a year can make. May this one land closer to peace and compassion. And may the hostages all come home.
